Renaissance Maze
Renaissance Maze
Carved Stone
15th century ~ Italy

This motif was inspired by a design in Lucca Cathedral in Italy.

The Italian Renaissance was a period of tumultuous political disorder concurrent with an unparalleled flowering of artistic achievement. The ordered symmetry of this maze is thus an apt metaphore for the Renaissance: its appearance of ordered perfection disguises a reality of blind alleys and trickery.
