Reimann Sculpture in Plexiglas & Steel
|
|
Mr. Reimann became interested in working in Plexiglas and steel when he
was in graduate school. Over three decades, in increasingly large and complex
sculptures, he explored the interaction of surface, form, and light. His basic
structure was a steel armature with elongated Plexiglas 'ribs,' each of which is tipped
with a bar prism to increase the sculpture's play with available (natural) light.
It should be noted that these sculptures were created without the
benefit of progressive computer imaging. Every Plexiglas rib was polished by hand in
a seven step scraping and sanding process. The bar prisms at the end of each rib
were also hand finished--the process for that finish is nine steps.

Some pieces pose such technical challenges that Mr. Reimann creates a
small scale version before beginning work on a final piece.

The grand sculptures displayed above were an extension of Mr. Reimann's
earlier, more intimate works. These sculptures are for the most part in
private collections on the East Coast. He continues to enjoy working on
these small pieces, though the large-scale work intervenes.
