This sculpture was part of a series of privately funded artwork commissioned
by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority--a landmark event, the first-ever
art installations along the Turnpike.
Funded by Mobil Oil, this piece consists of an eight foot circular monolith
granite basin with four fountain jets which rain down on the sculpture.
The basin fills over a slow cycle, submerging the piece up to the frog's
head, and then abruptly emptying as a valve releases. The simple rising
and falling of the water creates the effect that the turtle is moving--for
such a simple mechanism, a surprisingly dramatic motion. |

Glass, multi-layered sand-blast technique
This panel experiments with the use of multi-layered stencil sand-blasting.
Protective rubber stencil is applied to the glass, cut to the design, removed, and
reapplied in this complicated, many-stage process.
