USRowing Youth Nationals, June 2016

June 9, 2016

Will took a day trip to West Windsor, New Jersey, to watch his older pair of granddaughters row to 5th place in their Lightweight Double.

Retired from racing in 2014, he nonetheless enjoyed the view from the sidelines (at least for the day).

Pictured here with grandson Soren.

Irish Mid-Weight Draft Horse
Will has been getting out to Lincoln, MA this early summer to draw from a trio of these beauties who are being boarded out there.  I'm looking forward to seeing what results, but in the meantime... a few pictures of the great beasts themselves, and a note:

"Fascinating to see how the hoof is still evident, even with all the fur disguising things. Also fascinated with the seemingly completely arbitrary splotches of black and white. They like both apples and carrots, but get a little pushy about it. wr"

With thanks to Lesleh Anderson Heim, for a beautiful image of the event.

Reimann High Chair

The old saying "the shoe-maker's children run barefoot" doesn't always hold true--one of the delights of growing up in an artistic household is the fact that some of the furnishings and surroundings are unique, hand-made items that perform good service and enrich a home's comfort.

Whether it was carved rhinoceri, miniature toy dogs, a dollhouse with a beautiful cupola, or numerous household items, Will kept his family well-supplied when his children were young, and continues this work to this day.

Will originally constructed and carved this chair in 1963 for his first child; it has since been used by all his children and grandchildren.

The tray had needed refurbishing for a number of years; Will recently completed this work over the summer and photographed the results.

Click here to see how beautifully the piece cleaned up.

Will has been in Germany, but he's back, and has resumed work on the photography archive.

This week, five new images.  The animal ones are excellent (the warthog head is my favorite), but--this week, two figure drawings.

We have been attempting to track down images of Will's Elaine series, from the early 70s.  If anyone checking through here happens to be someone who has one or more of those hanging on their walls--would it be possible for you to forward us a best-quality image of your drawing?  It would be greatly appreciated from this end.

On another note, there are some issues with the "updated" templates that make up these pages.  While I'm getting that sorted, I'll be putting all this week's fresh images on this blog page, so they'll be easy to see/locate.

Rhinoceros!

Picture
Will has started to refurbish the beloved Reimann rhinoceros.  This ears were chewed down by the last Reimann puppy, and it has been languishing in his shop for some years awaiting repair.

The ears are now fixed.  Other detail work proceeds.  The pictures are up on a new page, "Rhinoceros."

Will just returned from the San Diego Crew Classic, which he attends every year for the dual purpose of rowing and visiting the San Diego Zoo.

He reports: "1 and ½ drawings."  And some decent racing.

That's artist-code for "One that I'm satisfied with, and one that has some good passages, but does not overall cohere."

Needless to say, I am currently harrying him to get a picture of at least the "1," because I, twelve thousand miles away, would like to see it.  Anyone else?  *g*

The Radnor Cairn and Griffin

On the Radnor Township page, a Google Map which shows these two monumental scupltures by Will has been added.

The technology is not perfect (the artworks do not have street addresses, so only the Griffin is visible on the first view of the map.

Still, it's pretty cool.

Will's work bag
It has been a pleasure for Will and Katya both, to receive the many kind comments that have welcomed the new pages.  Thank you to all!

We are still working out how to use this page/blog.  So far, so good.

Currently Will is responding to messages as he sees them, and Katya is combing through afterwards to tidy up.  Comments may disappear after Will or Katya has had contact with a poster directly.

To avoid spam, email addresses have not been published on this site, but we will attempt to respond to all messages we receive, privately or publicly, as appropriate.

Enjoy the mildly comical "pushmi-pullyu" effect as Katya and Will sort out who responds to what, and where?  (Katya's hope is that her role in technical support will become less visible as Will familiarizes himself with the technology)
